But is it truly useful, or simply an expensive gimmick? Between real convenience and unnecessary features, we take stock of these systems that let you control your gate directly from your smartphone. Find out whether this investment really matches your needs and lifestyle.

What is a connected gate, and how does it work?

A connected gate is essentially a standard gate fitted with smart automation, capable of communicating with mobile devices via the internet. The system generally consists of an electronic control unit connected to the motor and a dedicated app that you install on your smartphone. This technology uses either your home Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, or a GSM connection to establish communication between your phone and the opening mechanism.

Setup is generally straightforward: after the control unit is installed by our technicians, or by you if you are a capable DIYer, you simply download the corresponding app and follow the instructions to sync your gate with your smartphone. Once configured, you can control your gate remotely, whether you are in your living room or miles from home.

Advantages

The first obvious benefit is ease of use—no more lost remotes or batteries failing at the worst possible moment. With a simple app on your phone, which you always have with you, access to your property becomes far easier. Imagine this: you are coming home late from work in heavy rain—no need to lower the window or get out of your vehicle; one tap on your screen and it is done.

Improved security is another major advantage. These systems let you know exactly who is coming and going, thanks to real-time notifications. You can also grant temporary access to visitors, such as family members or service providers, without having to make spare keys or share your codes. Some models even include a built-in camera, allowing you to see who is at your gate before deciding to open it.

Disadvantages

Despite its many strengths, the upfront cost of a connected gate remains significantly higher than a traditional system. Between the equipment, installation, and sometimes subscriptions for certain premium features, the investment can quickly add up. At Districlos, we offer different ranges to suit all budgets, but it is important to assess whether the benefits justify this additional expense for your personal situation.

Technological dependence is also something to consider. What happens if the internet goes down, the app has an issue, or your phone battery is flat? Most of the systems we offer include backup options, such as a standard remote control or a keypad, but these situations can still be inconvenient if you rely solely on smartphone connectivity.

Features that make the difference

Among the available options, certain advanced features genuinely transform the user experience:

Geolocation: your gate recognises you and opens automatically as you approach

Voice control via assistants such as Alexa or Google Home

Scheduling for opening and closing at set times

Detailed activity history that can be viewed remotely

Integration with other home automation systems in your house

The ability to manage multiple access points from a single interface is particularly appreciated by our customers who own several buildings or residences. You can control the gate at your main home, your second home, or even your elderly parents’ home, all from the same app—greatly simplifying day-to-day management.

Are you tired of looking for your remote controls or getting out of the car to open your gate?
