Choosing the right height for your aluminium gate helps ensure the security of your property, the privacy of your loved ones, and the aesthetics of your home. A gate that is too low may not provide the necessary protection, while a gate that is too high may look out of proportion with your mesh, fence and/or pedestrian gate. To make matters more complex, your gate height must comply with any local regulations and the local planning rules (PLU). In this article, our experts guide you through the key criteria to consider when choosing the right height for your aluminium gate.

Why is the height of your aluminium gate important?

First, it determines the level of security: a taller gate is more effective at preventing intrusions and deterring break-in attempts, among other security solutions, of course. Next, the height affects your privacy. If you want to protect your private life from prying eyes, a taller gate is ideal for creating a visual barrier.

The aesthetics of your property are also affected by the gate’s height. A gate that is well proportioned to your fence and the front of your house adds a touch of elegance and visual harmony. Conversely, an over- or undersized gate will negatively affect the beauty and overall look of your garden.

Regulations on the height of your gate

When choosing the height of your aluminium gate, it is important to take into account local regulations, which can vary from one municipality to another. The maximum permitted height for a gate opening onto the public highway is defined by your municipality’s planning rules, available at the town hall or on the municipality’s website (if an online version is available).

These regulations are mainly intended to ensure road safety by avoiding obstructed visibility, and to preserve the neighbourhood’s architectural harmony. For example, in some residential areas, gate height may be limited to 2 metres to avoid an overly imposing appearance and ensure a degree of visual consistency. In addition, if your property is located in a protected area or near a historic monument, additional restrictions may apply to preserve heritage. It is therefore essential to find out and comply with these regulations before installing your gate, to avoid any breach that could lead to penalties or requirements to modify or even remove it.

Our tips for choosing the right aluminium gate

First, assess your needs in terms of security and privacy: if security is a strong (even primary) concern, choose a gate with a minimum height of 1.80 metres. For those who want to preserve their privacy, a gate of 2 metres or more is recommended so that nosy neighbours do not intrude on your life.

Because it matters for your wellbeing and your garden’s, consider the aesthetics and harmony the gate can bring. Make sure the gate height is proportionate to your fence and the size of your house to create a consistent, elegant look. Last but not least, think about maintenance and durability. A good-quality aluminium gate requires little maintenance and stands up well to bad weather, but you will still need to do occasional cleaning.
