You&#8217;re not alone. Every year, hundreds of fences end up bent, torn off, or lying on the ground after a windy episode. The problem is not necessarily the fence itself. It&#8217;s often the sail effect created by the privacy screen that turns your fence into a wind catch. Before it starts blowing, there may still be time to act. Here&#8217;s how to check if your installation will hold up, and what to do if the answer is no.      <\/p>\n<h2>Why a privacy screen changes everything in the face of wind<\/h2>\n<p>A simple fence is metal wire with gaps between the mesh. The wind passes through without forcing. Add an opaque privacy screen and the situation changes: you&#8217;ve just created a solid surface that blocks the air. Your 20-metre fence at 1.50 m high? It behaves like a 30 m\u00b2 wall exposed to gusts.    <\/p>\n<p>The higher the opacity rate (80%, 90%, 100%), the greater the wind resistance. A rigid PVC slat privacy screen with total opacity takes far more pressure than a knitted mesh that lets some air filter through. This is not a minor detail: it&#8217;s the leading cause of breakage on mesh fences during storms.  <\/p>\n<h2>The 5-point check before the storm<\/h2>\n<p>You don&#8217;t need to be an engineer to assess the strength of your installation. Go out into the garden and check these elements one by one: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Do the posts move when you push them?<\/strong> If a post sways by hand, it won&#8217;t hold up to gusts. Check that they are properly set in concrete or that the base plates are correctly bolted. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Are all the privacy screen fastenings in place?<\/strong> A privacy screen fixed with three cable ties instead of twenty will come loose and tear the fence with it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Is the fence properly tensioned between the posts?<\/strong> A fence that sags and forms waves concentrates forces at the fixing points.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Are there tension wires at the top, middle, and bottom?<\/strong> Without these reinforcements, flexible fencing deforms and eventually gives way.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Are bracing struts present at the ends and corners?<\/strong> These prevent the posts from tipping over under pressure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you tick more than two negative points, your fence is vulnerable. You need to take action before the first gusts. <\/p>\n<h2>Post anchoring: this is where everything is decided<\/h2>\n<p>You can have the best fence on the market, but if the posts are poorly anchored, everything else follows in the fall. For a fence fitted with a privacy screen, the posts must be set in concrete footings of at least 30 \u00d7 30 \u00d7 50 cm deep. Many &#8220;DIY&#8221; installations make do with a 20 cm hole and a handful of quick-setting concrete. That holds in good weather. Not when it&#8217;s blowing.    <\/p>\n<p>If your posts are fixed on base plates, check the tightness of the bolts and the condition of the anchors. Loose soil, a cracked support, or undersized anchors, and the entire panel tips over. On exposed sites (open ground, wind corridor, hilltop), it may be necessary to reduce the spacing between posts to 2 metres instead of 2.50 m to better distribute the forces.  <\/p>\n<h2>Torn privacy screen: the most common fixing mistakes<\/h2>\n<p>A privacy screen that comes loose in the wind doesn&#8217;t just blow away. It acts as a lever that twists the fence, bends the posts, and can damage the entire fence line. The main cause? Insufficient or poorly distributed fastenings.   <\/p>\n<p>Low-quality cable ties, placed every 50 cm only on the top wire: this is the classic disaster scenario. A privacy screen must be fixed every 20 to 30 cm on the top and bottom tension wires, and ideally also on the intermediate wire. Prefer stainless steel clips or specific fastenings to plastic cable ties, which break at the first cold snap. If your privacy screen is woven fabric, tension it properly without leaving folds that would form air pockets.   <\/p>\n<h2>When the fence is not designed for this<\/h2>\n<p>Let&#8217;s be honest: some installations are not designed to support a privacy screen in the wind. A 1.20 m flexible fence mounted on lightweight stakes without bracing struts is a boundary fence, not a structure capable of withstanding 40 to 60 daN\/m\u00b2 in a storm. <\/p>\n<p>Two options in this case. The first: temporarily remove the privacy screen before the windy episode to save the fence and posts. It&#8217;s inconvenient but effective. The second, more durable: reinforce the installation with reinforced posts, additional bracing struts, and suitable tension wires. Or switch to a welded rigid panel system, which offers much better structural resistance with an integrated or clipped privacy screen.
