Base plates for fences are often an overlooked yet effective choice when it comes to securing your property and extending the lifespan of your fence. Whether you are looking to reinforce the base of an existing fence or install a new one, these plates offer an effective solution to meet various practical and aesthetic needs. In this article, our experts provide you with the information on when and why to choose base plates, including their benefits and the situations where they can make all the difference for your property.

What is a Base Plate?

A base plate is a slab, a concrete or steel panel installed at the base of a fence, just above the ground or buried to a certain depth. Its primary role is to reinforce the fence structure by protecting it against damage caused by soil moisture, ground movement deformations, and the accumulation of dirt or leaves.

By acting as a physical barrier between the ground and the fence, base plates help extend its lifespan by reducing the risks of degradation and corrosion. Furthermore, they add a layer of security by preventing wild animals and rodents from entering under the fence, which is particularly beneficial in areas where wildlife can damage the fence’s foundations.

When Should I Install Base Plates Under My Fence?

It is advisable to install base plates under your fence during its initial installation or as an upgrade to an existing fence showing signs of wear at the base. Base plates are particularly recommended in environments where the soil is humid, clayey, or subject to significant temperature variations, as they protect the fence against moisture and frost.

Moreover, if you have pets or live in an area with abundant wildlife, adding base plates can prevent digging attempts under the fence, for example, foxes trying to reach your chicken coop. They are also useful for properties located on slopes, where erosion can compromise the stability of the fence.

How to Install Them?

Installing base plates under your fence may seem complex, but it is accessible with the right steps. Start by preparing the ground by clearing the area where the plates will be placed, removing debris, and leveling the soil if necessary.

Next, measure the length of the fence to determine the number of plates needed. Place each plate at the base of the fence, aligning them correctly to ensure continuous protection.

Securely attach them to the fence posts using specific brackets or fasteners. Ensure that the plates are well-anchored and that there is no gap between them and the ground, which could allow water or debris to pass through. Finally, check the alignment and stability of the entire assembly before finalizing the installation. By following these steps, you guarantee effective and durable protection for your fence.
