Wisteria: Beautiful, Powerful, and Ruthless<\/h2>\n

Wisteria (Wisteria<\/em>) is probably the most treacherous climbing plant. Its purple clusters are enchanting, but its woody stems are true vises. In just a few years, they wrap around metal wires and posts with enough torsional force to bend steel. This is no exaggeration: wisteria deforms wrought iron railings, tears off gutters, and breaks even sturdy trellises. <\/p>\n

On a flexible or rigid fence, the result is always the same. The mesh distorts, the posts lean, and after three to five years, your fence resembles a vegetated pile of scrap metal. If you absolutely want wisteria, install it on an independent pergola, well away from your fence. <\/p>\n

Ivy: The Silent Invader<\/h2>\n

Less known than the previous two, the trumpet vine (Campsis radicans<\/em>) is nevertheless formidable. Its orange or red trumpet-shaped flowers are magnificent, but this plant has two major drawbacks for a fence: it produces very thick woody stems and it suckers everywhere. <\/p>\n

Specifically, the trumpet vine wraps around and thickens year after year. Its secondary trunks can reach several centimeters in diameter and exert constant pressure on the mesh and fixings. Its suckers, which are root shoots, appear several meters from the mother plant, sometimes lifting fence bases or piercing the ground at the foot of posts. <\/p>\n

What are the alternatives for adding greenery without breaking everything?<\/h2>\n

Not all climbing plants are fence destroyers. Some species remain light and easy to control: <\/p>\n
