Type of paint, surface preparation, application technique: here&#8217;s what you need to know before picking up the brush.    <\/p>\n<h2>Why Rigid Fencing Deteriorates Over Time<\/h2>\n<p>A rigid fence panel is designed for durability. It is generally protected by galvanization (a zinc layer) and a plastic coating (polyester powder or PVC). However, this protection has a limited lifespan. UV rays, rain, frost, mechanical impacts, and climbing vegetation eventually alter the surface layer.   <\/p>\n<p>The coating cracks, rust spots appear in exposed areas, and the original color, often green or anthracite, loses its intensity. At this stage, there are two options: replace the affected panels or repaint them. The second solution is much more cost-effective.  <\/p>\n<h2>Properly Prepare the Fencing Before Painting<\/h2>\n<p>This step is crucial for the entire process. Painting directly onto dirty or rusty fencing guarantees a result that won&#8217;t last six months. Start with a complete cleaning of the panel: use a wire brush or medium-grit sandpaper on rusty areas, then wipe with a damp cloth to remove dust and residue.  <\/p>\n<p>If rust is already well established, apply a rust converter before any painting. This product transforms iron oxide into a stable layer, ready to receive paint. Allow it to dry for the time indicated by the manufacturer, generally 24 hours. Remember to also protect the ground and surrounding elements (posts, walls, vegetation) with a tarp.   <\/p>\n<h2>Which Paint to Choose for Rigid Fencing<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s not a matter of using just any paint. For outdoor metal fencing, you need a product formulated for metal, resistant to weathering and corrosion. Two main families are suitable:  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Glycero anti-rust paint: very opaque, good adhesion to metal, good durability over time. It requires white spirit for tool cleaning. <\/li>\n<li>Acrylic metal paint (water-based): less odorous, dries faster, but sometimes slightly less durable in highly exposed environments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A 2-in-1 product (primer + finish) simplifies application. Brands specializing in exterior metal paint offer suitable ranges, often available in green, anthracite grey, or black, the classic colors for rigid fencing. <\/p>\n<h2>The Correct Application Technique<\/h2>\n<p>Painting a rigid welded panel, with its dozens of intertwined wires, is not like painting a wall. A classic brush quickly becomes discouraging. The most effective method remains spray paint (aerosol) or a low-pressure paint gun. You can cover the mesh uniformly, without drips, and much more quickly.   <\/p>\n<p>If you only have a small section to treat, a round brush or a small lacquer roller may suffice. Apply two thin coats rather than one thick one: the finish will be more even and the durability better. Respect the drying time between coats (generally 4 to 8 hours depending on the product and weather). Avoid painting in humid, windy, or direct sunlight conditions.   <\/p>\n<h2>Repaint or Replace: How to Decide<\/h2>\n<p>Repainting rigid fencing makes sense when the panels are structurally in good condition. If the wires are simply discolored or slightly surface-oxidized, a coat of paint is enough to restore their good appearance for several years. <\/p>\n<p>However, if rust has deeply attacked the metal, if welds are broken, or if the panels are deformed, paint will only mask the problem. In such cases, it is better to replace the affected panels with new ones.
