However, its welded mesh structure forms a perfect support for creating a green wall. Rather than investing in an additional trellis, you might as well exploit what is already in place: climbing plants, hanging pots, or planters fixed to the posts. Here is how to go about it in practical terms.

Why rigid fencing is well-suited for greening

A rigid panel is more than just a simple barrier. The welded steel wires form a regular, stable, and resistant grid—exactly what climbing plants need to take hold. Unlike flexible mesh fencing, which deforms under the weight of vegetation, rigid panels maintain their shape even when covered in dense foliage.

Another advantage is the height. With panels ranging from 1.50 m to 2 m, you have enough vertical surface for a real green wall without installing an additional frame. Furthermore, notched posts allow for easy attachment of hooks, planters, or staking systems. Everything is already there.

Choosing plants based on the desired effect

Not all climbing plants are suitable in the same way. The choice depends on what you want: a dense screen all year round, seasonal flowering, or a bit of both.

For evergreen coverage, ivy, star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides), or honeysuckle are good candidates. They keep their leaves in winter and offer natural screening. For color, clematis, climbing roses, or passionflowers bloom from spring to autumn. And if the idea appeals to you, consider edible plants: climbing beans, sweet peas, or small cucumbers. Your fence can easily become a vertical vegetable garden.

Preparing the base of the fence before planting

It is often forgotten, but the success of a green wall is determined at ground level. If your fence is installed on a concrete slab or a low wall, you will need to install growing containers or planters at the base of the panels. Choose containers at least 30 cm deep so that the roots have enough space.

If the fence is installed directly in the ground, that is ideal. Work the soil to a depth of 40 to 50 cm along the panel, enrich it with compost, and plant about 20 cm from the base to prevent moisture from damaging the metal posts. Mulching at the base will limit evaporation and reduce maintenance.

Attaching supports and accessories to the panels

Welded mesh allows you to hang all kinds of elements without drilling or welding. The simplest solutions include:

Hook-on pots and planters: these clip onto the horizontal wires of the panel. They are practical for herbs, strawberries, or trailing plants.

Guiding ties: flexible rubber ties or reusable collars to direct stems along the mesh without damaging them.

Geotextile felt pockets: fixed to the panel, they hold lightweight substrate and small plants (sedums, ferns, herbs).

Avoid metal fasteners that may scratch the anti-corrosion coating. Prefer plastic or rubber ties.

Maintaining your green wall without complicating your life

A green wall on a rigid fence requires less maintenance than you might think, provided you plan ahead. For the first two years, you must regularly guide the stems through the mesh to achieve uniform coverage. After that, one or two prunings per year are enough to contain the vegetation and prevent it from overflowing into the neighbor’s yard.

For watering, a drip system installed along the base of the fence simplifies everything. Connect it to a timer, and it’s all set. Also, check once a year that the weight of the vegetation has not deformed the panels or shifted the posts. On a well-sealed or correctly base-plated fence, the risk remains low.

Greening without compromising the strength of the fence

The question often arises: does the weight of the plants risk damaging the fence? On a properly installed rigid panel, with posts set in concrete or fixed on base plates, the answer is no. These structures already withstand the wind load of a privacy screen; they can easily support climbing vegetation.

However, certain very vigorous species such as wisteria or fast-growing ivy can, over time, exert significant pressure. If you opt for these plants, prune them regularly and check that the stems do not wrap around the posts to the point of deforming them. For a more relaxed approach, star jasmine or clematis remain safe choices: lightweight, easy to control, and pleasant to look at.

Combining natural screening and rigid fencing

Transforming your fence into a green wall is also a way to gain privacy without installing a synthetic screen. A well-established evergreen climber offers screening that evolves with the seasons, filters the wind instead of blocking it, and brings a bit of life to a property boundary.

At Districlos, our rigid panels are designed to last and adapt to all projects, including the greenest ones. If you are unsure about which type of fence to choose for a future green wall, our customer service team can guide you toward the solution best suited to your land.

Your rigid panel fence effectively delimits your property, but it lacks charm.
