Are you installing a motorised gate on an industrial site, a shared car park, or in a residential complex? Then you are directly concerned by the NF EN 13241+A2 standard. This European standard governs the manufacture, performance and safety of industrial, commercial and residential doors and gates. It is not optional: it is a regulatory requirement linked to CE marking. Here is what you need to know to stay compliant and avoid issues during an inspection. <\/p>\n

What the NF EN 13241+A2 standard actually covers<\/h2>\n

The NF EN 13241+A2 standard applies to all gates, industrial doors, roller shutters and barriers installed in areas that are not exclusively for private use. Warehouses, factories, condominiums, underground car parks, schools, hospitals, logistics zones: as soon as a gate is motorised and accessible to the public or employees, this standard applies. <\/p>\n

It sets requirements across several criteria: mechanical strength, wind resistance, operational safety, durability, and protection against crushing or shearing hazards. The manufacturer must provide a Declaration of Performance (DoP) and affix the CE marking to the product. Without this, the installation is non-compliant. Period. <\/p>\n

Why industrial and shared-use areas are particularly targeted<\/h2>\n

On a typical residential site, a gate serves a single home. In industrial or shared-use areas, the constraints are of a different order. The gate undergoes far more frequent opening\/closing cycles\u2014sometimes several hundred per day on a logistics site. The vehicles passing through are heavier. And the flow of people in the immediate vicinity of the gate significantly increases the risk of an accident. <\/p>\n

That is why the NF EN 13241+A2 standard requires enhanced safety devices in these contexts: photoelectric cells, safety edges, presence-detection systems, and closing-force limitation. A 6-metre sliding gate on an industrial site without this equipment is both a hazard and a clear case of non-compliance. <\/p>\n

Safety requirements not to overlook<\/h2>\n

The standard is based on a set of complementary standards, notably NF EN 12604 (mechanical strength) and NF EN 12453 (safe use of powered doors). Together, they require that any motorised gate used in a shared or industrial setting meets at least the following: <\/p>\n
