Among the four recognised solutions, the protective barrier remains the most widely used. It physically prevents access to the pool, which explains its popularity. However, not just any fence will do: to be compliant, your installation must meet the requirements of the NF P90-306 standard. Here is what it specifically requires and how to bring your pool into compliance.    <\/p>\n<h2>Why this standard exists<\/h2>\n<p>Each year in France, accidental drownings particularly affect children under 5. Private pools are among the highest-risk locations. In response, the legislator made the installation of a safety device mandatory under the law of 3 January 2003.  <\/p>\n<p>Four standards govern the four types of authorised devices: alarms (NF P90-307), covers (NF P90-308), enclosures (NF P90-309) and protective barriers (NF P90-306). The latter defines the characteristics a pool fence must meet to prevent a young child from accessing the pool on their own. <\/p>\n<h2>The technical requirements of the NF P90-306 standard<\/h2>\n<p>The standard sets strict criteria for the barrier\u2019s dimensions and strength. Key points: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The minimum height is 1.10 m between the ground and the top of the fence, so that a child under 5 cannot climb over it.<\/li>\n<li>The access gate must close and lock automatically. The unlocking system must be inaccessible or not understandable to a young child. <\/li>\n<li>The barrier must not provide any footholds or climbing aids: no horizontal bars that can be used as rungs, and no spacing greater than 102 mm between vertical bars.<\/li>\n<li>The structure must withstand a 50 kg impact without permanent deformation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The standard also requires the barrier to be installed at least 1 m from the pool edge, to give an adult time to react if a child gets through the gate.<\/p>\n<h2>Which materials for a compliant barrier?<\/h2>\n<p>The NF P90-306 standard does not prescribe a single material. Aluminium, tempered glass, treated wood or rigid mesh: all are possible, provided the strength and sizing criteria are met. Aluminium is the most common choice, mainly for its durability and low maintenance.  <\/p>\n<p>Rigid welded mesh is also an attractive option, especially for large gardens where the fence run is long. It is sturdy, understated and less expensive than other materials. The standard is specific: the access gate to the swimming area must be fitted with an automatic closing system (door closer, return spring) and a lock located at least 1.10 m from the ground, or requiring a complex action (double action, for example). <\/p>\n<p>A gate that remains open, even occasionally, makes the entire system non-compliant. This is something to check regularly, especially after winter, when mechanisms tend to seize up. <\/p>\n<h2>What penalties apply in the event of non-compliance?<\/h2>\n<p>Not having a safety device around an in-ground pool exposes the owner to a fine of up to \u20ac45,000. And if the barrier is installed but does not comply with the NF P90-306 standard, the situation is no better: in the event of an accident, your civil and criminal liability may be engaged, and your insurer may refuse any compensation. <\/p>\n<p>Keep the certificate of conformity issued by the manufacturer or installer. This document certifies that your barrier has been tested to the current standard. It may be requested when selling the property or in the event of a claim.  <\/p>\n<h2>How to choose and install your pool barrier<\/h2>\n<p>Before buying, measure the exact perimeter to be fenced, while respecting the regulatory distance from the pool. Identify how many gates are needed and the type of ground (soil, concrete slab, wooden deck), as this determines the fixing method. <\/p>\n<p>Rigid welded-panel fences offer good value for money for securing a pool area.
