Planning for conduit runs during construction saves you from reopening everything later. The problem is that a fence with concrete foundation and a trench for fiber don’t always work well together. Here’s how to manage both without complicating your life. <\/p>\n

Why Plan for Fiber During Fence Installation<\/h2>\n

When you install a rigid fence<\/strong>, you’re already digging for post foundations, sometimes for a low wall or concrete grade beam. This is exactly when laying a standby conduit<\/strong> costs almost nothing: you’re already moving earth. <\/p>\n

The scenario to avoid is finishing everything, pouring the concrete, then receiving fiber six months later and having to break part of the structure<\/strong> or run the conduit overhead in an unsightly way. A TPC conduit installed from the start, even empty, leaves you an open door. Connection will be done by simple cable pulling, without masonry rework. <\/p>\n

Which Conduit to Use for Fiber Optic<\/h2>\n

For fiber, use a green TPC conduit (corrugated duct)<\/strong>, reserved for telecommunications networks. The standard diameter is \u00d840 mm<\/strong>, more than sufficient for fiber. If you want to pull multiple cables or plan for other uses, \u00d863 mm remains an option. <\/p>\n

Two points not to overlook:<\/p>\n

  • Place a pull wire (draw wire) inside the conduit<\/strong> during installation, otherwise the cable will be impossible to pull once the conduit is buried.<\/li>\n
  • Avoid tight bends<\/strong>: fiber does not tolerate excessively small bend radii. Favor wide curves and pull boxes at direction changes. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The green color matters: it signals a telecom network and prevents confusion with electricity (red) or water.<\/p>\n

    Where to Run the Conduit Relative to the Fence<\/h2>\n

    This is where it matters. The concrete foundation of your rigid fence<\/strong> is an obstacle. You have several options depending on your site configuration. <\/p>\n

    If your fence runs along the road where fiber arrives, the most logical approach is to run the conduit parallel to the fence, in a separate trench<\/strong>, at approximately 50 cm depth. You stay clear of the foundations to avoid weakening them. If the conduit must cross under the fence to reach the house, plan for a passage under the grade beam or between two posts<\/strong>, before pouring the concrete. <\/p>\n

    Never embed the fiber conduit directly in the foundation concrete without reason. In case of problems, you would be stuck. A free passage, in a dedicated trench, always remains simpler to maintain. <\/p>\n

    Maintaining Distances from Other Utilities<\/h2>\n

    Fiber optic often runs near other utilities: electricity, water, gas. The basic rule is to not mix conduits in the same trench without separation<\/strong>. Each network has its color-coded warning mesh, placed approximately 20 cm above the conduit. <\/p>\n

    For fiber (telecom), the mesh is green<\/strong>. If you share a trench with electricity, maintain a minimum spacing of 20 cm<\/strong> between conduits and keep each network at its regulatory depth. These distances prevent interference and protect each installation during future work. <\/p>\n

    At What Depth to Bury the Conduit<\/h2>\n

    For a telecom network under a pedestrian area or garden, plan for a depth of approximately 50 cm<\/strong>. Under a vehicle area (driveway entrance, vehicle passage), go down to 60 to 80 cm<\/strong> to protect the conduit from crushing. <\/p>\n

    Along a rigid fence, depth also depends on your post foundations<\/strong>, which often go down 40-50 cm. The idea is to coordinate both: dig the fiber trench at a compatible depth without destabilizing the concrete footings. If the ground is loose, a sand bed at the bottom of the trench protects the conduit. <\/p>\n

    Planning Pull Boxes and Connection Points<\/h2>\n

    A pull box<\/strong> (small buried enclosure) at each direction change or approximately every 30 meters greatly facilitates cable pulling. Without it, pulling fiber over a long distance with several turns becomes a headache. <\/p>\n

    Also plan the arrival point at the house<\/strong>: a pull box or standby riser at the base of the facade, where the technician will connect. On the street side, leave an accessible pull chamber or standby conduit<\/strong>, typically at the property line, where the public network arrives. This junction point is what the operator will use on installation day. <\/p>\n

    Coordinating Fence and Fiber on the Same Project<\/h2>\n

    The most efficient approach is to handle both structures together. While you’re opening the ground for your rigid fence<\/strong>, you lay the fiber conduit at the same time. You share the excavation work, save time, and avoid reopening later. <\/p>\n
