The sealing depth<\/strong> is the factor that makes the difference between an installation that lasts for years and a job that needs to be redone. So, how deep should you bury your posts? The answer depends on several factors: fence height, soil type, and wind exposure. Let’s take a closer look. <\/p>\n

The basic rule: one-third of the post height<\/h2>\n

The most common rule is simple to remember: the sealing should represent about one-third of the post’s height above ground<\/strong>. In practical terms, for a 1.50 m high fence, you should plan for a post buried to a depth of about 50 cm<\/strong>. For a 1.80 m fence, this increases to 60 cm. <\/p>\n

This proportion ensures that the post has sufficient anchoring to resist lateral stress<\/strong>, particularly wind pressure on the panel or mesh. The higher your fence, the greater the wind load, and the deeper the post must be driven. It is a matter of leverage: the buried part must counterbalance the exposed part. <\/p>\n

Adapting the depth to the type of fence<\/h2>\n

Not all posts are subject to the same forces. A flexible mesh post<\/strong> handles less pressure than a post supporting rigid panels<\/strong> or privacy slats, which offer a solid surface to the wind. <\/p>\n

Here are the generally recommended guidelines based on the type of installation:<\/p>\n

  • Chain-link fencing (1 to 1.50 m)<\/strong>: 40 to 50 cm sealing depth<\/li>\n
  • Rigid panels (up to 2 m)<\/strong>: 50 to 70 cm sealing depth<\/li>\n
  • Privacy fencing or screening<\/strong>: 60 cm minimum, more if the area is exposed<\/li>\n
  • Gate or end post<\/strong>: up to 80 cm, as it supports more load<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The start, corner, and end posts<\/strong> deserve special attention. These are the ones that take up the tension of the fence line. It is highly advisable to seal them deeper<\/strong> than the intermediate posts. <\/p>\n

    The influence of soil type<\/h2>\n

    The nature of your ground changes many things. Clay or sandy soil<\/strong> offers less resistance than compact or rocky soil. In loose ground, you generally need to increase the depth<\/strong> by 10 to 20 cm and widen the hole to create a larger concrete footing that distributes the load. <\/p>\n

    Also, watch out for frost<\/strong>. In cold regions, the ground freezes to a depth of several dozen centimeters. If your sealing is too shallow, freeze-thaw cycles can gradually lift the post. The rule: go below the frost line<\/strong>, often between 50 and 80 cm depending on the region. It is best to check local recommendations before digging. <\/p>\n

    What dimensions should the sealing hole be?<\/h2>\n

    Depth isn’t everything: the diameter of the hole<\/strong> also matters. A hole that is too narrow does not leave enough concrete around the post to ensure proper support. We generally aim for a hole with a diameter 3 to 4 times larger<\/strong> than the post section. <\/p>\n

    For a standard 8 x 8 cm post, allow for a hole about 25 to 30 cm in diameter<\/strong>. Remember to slightly flare the bottom of the hole: this inverted cone shape improves anchoring and prevents the post from moving under horizontal forces. A bed of gravel at the bottom also helps drain water and limits moisture rising. <\/p>\n

    Successful concrete sealing<\/h2>\n

    Once the hole is dug to the right depth, it’s time for sealing. Position the post, brace it temporarily, and check the verticality with a spirit level<\/strong> before pouring the concrete. This is the moment to get it right: a post misaligned at this stage will stay that way permanently. <\/p>\n

    Then pour the sealing concrete<\/strong> around the post, making sure to fill the entire hole without leaving air pockets. Form a slight slope on the surface so that rainwater flows away from the post. Then let the concrete dry completely<\/strong>, usually 24 to 48 hours before handling the post, and several days before attaching panels or tensioning the mesh. Patience at this stage avoids many disappointments. <\/p>\n

    Errors to avoid<\/h2>\n

    The most common mistake remains sealing too shallowly<\/strong>, motivated by the desire to go fast or save on concrete. The result: the fence moves at the first storm. Another frequent trap is neglecting the corner and end posts<\/strong>, even though they bear the highest tensions. <\/p>\n

    We also often see posts sealed without checking the plumb, or poured into a hole that is too narrow. Finally, do not underestimate the wind load<\/strong> of solid fences: a privacy screen turns your fence into a real sail.
