Winter often leads people to put off outdoor work until spring. However, for safety or privacy reasons, you cannot always wait for the return of warmer weather. Installing a fence in cold conditions is entirely possible, but it requires some adjustments. Frost changes the consistency of the ground and disrupts the setting of concrete. <\/p>\n

To prevent your posts from shifting as soon as the first thaw arrives, here are the essential precautions to take on a winter job site.<\/p>\n

Digging in frozen ground: the question of depth<\/h2>\n

Under the effect of frost, the water in the soil hardens and turns the ground into a real stone slab. Forget the standard spade: digging by hand quickly becomes exhausting and imprecise, which makes it harder to align the posts. <\/p>\n

The most important point here is the depth of the holes. In France, the frost line is generally between 50 and 80 centimetres, depending on the region and altitude. Your foundations must go below this limit. If the hole is too shallow, the freeze\u2013thaw cycle will move the soil, lifting the posts and warping your panels or mesh as early as spring. <\/p>\n

What happens to concrete in very cold weather<\/h2>\n

Concrete is the most sensitive element on a winter job site. To set and harden properly, cement needs water. But if the temperature drops below 5\u00b0C, this chemical reaction slows down significantly. Worse still: below 0\u00b0C, the water freezes, expands, and destroys the internal structure of the mortar before it has even had a chance to dry. <\/p>\n

Concrete that has been affected by frost loses all strength. Even if it seems solid at first glance, it will eventually crumble under the pressure of wind on the fence. To seal your posts durably, the water in the mix must not freeze at all during the first 48 hours. <\/p>\n

How can you successfully seal the posts?<\/h2>\n

To work despite the cold, a few adjustments are necessary. First, you can use a rapid-setting cement. By hardening faster, it generates its own heat (heat of hydration), which helps it withstand low temperatures. Adding an antifreeze admixture to the mixing water also helps lower its freezing point. <\/p>\n

A few simple tips also make a difference: use lukewarm water for the mix and check that the sand or gravel is not frosted. Once the concrete has been poured, immediately cover the base of the post with an insulating tarp, straw, or polystyrene boards to protect the foundations from overnight frost. <\/p>\n

Watch out for brittle materials<\/h2>\n

Cold does not only affect concrete; it also weakens your equipment. Plastics, PVC and certain composites become very brittle under frost. A hammer blow that is slightly too hard or excessive tension on a fixing clamp can crack a part cleanly. <\/p>\n

If you are installing mesh fencing or privacy screening panels, handle them gently. Avoid leaving your accessories outside the day before the work: store them in a temperate place (such as a garage or workshop) until the last moment. Also make sure you have good gloves, as handling ice-cold steel posts quickly becomes painful without proper protection. <\/p>\n
