Keeping ducks in your garden ensures a lively space and provides an excellent natural way to get rid of slugs. The downside is that these birds are easy prey. To let them roam without stress, it is essential to install a solid fence. The choice of fencing will depend on the size of your ducks, but above all on the predators lurking nearby. <\/p>\n

Unlike chickens, the majority of domestic ducks do not fly (or very little, except for specific cases like mallards). The real danger therefore does not come from the inside, but from the outside. Your enclosure, which should ideally include a water point, must be a rampart against foxes, stray dogs, cats, and small pests such as polecats or weasels. <\/p>\n

The fence has a double mission: to keep your ducks safe and to discourage intruders. The latter will not hesitate to dig under the fencing or try to cut through it. Another important point: the ducks’ environment is constantly humid. You therefore need a resistant material that will not rust after a few months. <\/p>\n

Hexagonal wire netting: economical but lightweight<\/h2>\n

Hexagonal wire netting (the famous “chicken wire” with its hexagonal mesh) is the most economical and flexible option. It is very easy to install, even on uneven ground, and is more than enough to define a large roaming area for good-sized ducks. <\/p>\n

The problem is its resistance. While it prevents your ducks from escaping, it will not stop a determined dog or a hungry fox. If you opt for this solution, it is imperative to choose a fairly thick galvanized steel wire and very tight mesh to prevent small predators from passing through. <\/p>\n

Welded wire mesh: safety first<\/h2>\n

If you want peace of mind, welded wire mesh in rolls is a much better option. It is much more rigid than hexagonal netting because the iron wires are welded at each intersection. It is impossible for a pest to push the mesh apart to squeeze through. <\/p>\n

This is the choice for durability. It resists physical assaults and does not deform over time. Furthermore, if you are raising ducklings or small breeds such as the Indian Runner or Saxony duck, small square or rectangular mesh will prevent them from getting their heads stuck\u2014a unfortunately common accident with mesh that is too wide. <\/p>\n
