Simple solutions allow you to install rigid panels, a wooden palisade, or simple wire mesh right next to the existing structure. To successfully complete your project without falling out with your neighbors, here are the rules and steps to follow.  <\/p>\n<h2>What the law says about co-ownership of party walls<\/h2>\n<p>Before getting out your toolbox, clarify the status of the wall. If it is strictly a party wall (it belongs to both you and your neighbor), you do not have the right to touch it without their written consent: no drilling, no painting, and no leaning a structure against it.  <\/p>\n<p>To avoid disputes, the simplest approach is to erect your fence on your property, at the boundary line, without your installation touching or leaning on the existing wall. By building on your land, you remain the sole owner of your installation.  <\/p>\n<p>However, remember to consult your municipality&#8217;s Local Urban Planning Document (PLU). It often regulates the maximum authorized heights for garden fences, and sometimes even the choice of colors or materials. <\/p>\n<h2>Choosing the right type of fence<\/h2>\n<p>The choice of material primarily depends on your budget and the desired aesthetic:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rigid mesh fencing:<\/strong> This is the most robust and easiest option to install. The panels are wind-resistant, and you can later add privacy slats if you wish to completely conceal the neighboring wall. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Wood or composite:<\/strong> Ideal if you are looking for a more natural and warm appearance to cover a raw masonry wall.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rolled mesh (single twist):<\/strong> Fixed on T-posts, it remains the most economical alternative for defining the space without visually weighing down your property&#8217;s border.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Fixing posts without damaging the existing wall<\/h2>\n<p>The real technical challenge lies in positioning the posts. Two methods are available depending on the nature of your soil. <\/p>\n<h3>Installation on base plates (concrete ground)<\/h3>\n<p>If a concrete slab or a masonry border runs along the wall, you can fix your posts on base plates. Simply anchor them directly into the support, taking care to offset a few centimeters from the party wall to avoid cracking its structure when drilling. <\/p>\n<h3>Direct embedding (earth ground)<\/h3>\n<p>If your ground is earth, you will need to embed the posts. Be careful when digging: the concrete foundations of the party wall often extend slightly onto your property. To avoid hitting them with a spade or damaging the existing structure, offset your holes by 5 to 10 centimeters from the wall, or dig slightly at an angle.  <\/p>\n<h2>Steps for a successful installation<\/h2>\n<p>To achieve impeccable alignment, start by stretching a string line between two stakes to mark the line of your future fence, maintaining your safety margin from the wall.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Mark the post locations<\/strong> on the ground, respecting the center distance of your panels or mesh.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dig the embedding holes<\/strong> (allow approximately 30 cm wide by 50 cm deep) or drill the concrete to install the base plates.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Position the first and last posts<\/strong> and check for plumb using a spirit level.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pour the embedding concrete<\/strong> or screw in your base plates, then install your panels or tension your wires as you go.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Privacy screening and daily maintenance<\/h2>\n<p>Once the work is complete, don&#8217;t forget future maintenance. Leaving a gap of a few centimeters between the wall and your new fence allows air to circulate. This prevents moisture from stagnating, thus protecting both the party wall and your own panels against the appearance of moss or mold.  <\/p>\n<p>Finally, if you decide to add privacy screens or screening kits, keep in mind that your fence will act as a sail in the wind.
